4R70W 1-2 shift clunk

my truck has developed a loud clunk during the 1-2 shift at light throttle openings. Has anyone here heard of this before? I took it into Ford and they reprogramed the computer. This made no difference. It was initially very very loud, however it has settled down into nice embarassing clunk.

The truck has almost 75,000 miles on it and is still in warranty. The Ford tech was able to duplicate the problem every time.

TIA

Chris

There is a TSB for the 2-1 downshift. I do not know of one for the 1-2 upshift. I have the clunk on the 2-1 downshift. Got the TSB done and this did not fix the problem. Have been back to the dealer again but this seems to be a charastic of some of the 4R70W trans. I only have 8,000 miles, I have decided to drive it until it causes bigger problems and then go back. Mines not too loud but I do notice it. Clunks at about 18-20 mph after I let of the gas and the get back on it after making a turn or in stop and go traffic.

I now have the very same clunk on the 3-2 downshift during light throttle. I also think I noticed it on the 3-4 shift.

Any ideas, the Ford tech seems to be putting off repairing it until I am out of warranty.

cujet,

Don't let'em play that warreny game with ya. If you really think something is wrong then it needs to be fixed. Have you tried another dealer? Do you have the Ford extended warrenty or an aftermarket warrenty? If its a dealer warrenty then it's kinda hard for them to deny you. However, with most aftermarket warrenties they try spend more time telling you why the warrenty will not cover that problem than they do fixing your car. Try another dealer and tell them what the situation is and what the other dealer has done or not done. Tell them you would like to see them be more helpful and that if they are you would be likley to come back and purcahse a new truck from them when the time comes to do that. If its broke it needs to be fixed.
That's just my opinion.
Good luck and I hope you are able to find a resolution before the warrenty expires.

Thanks, guys! I will try to get Ford to look into the 1-2 accumulator that is referenced in that article. I hope the problem is easily solved. I wish I had known about the inherrrent accumulator problem many miles ago. I would have changed it.

I bought the extended warranty through Ford. I know better than to purchase one from an aftermarket source. Still, Ford is reluctant to fix the problem.

Well I took the pan off tonight. I found 5 steel sheet metal ears. They look like drive tabs for a clutch plate. Kinda shaped like a fat lettter "P". They are about 3/8 inch long and 1/4 inch wide and made of (guessing) 16 ga steel. They look like they were damaged in the gears of the trans.

What do you guys think.

The Ford dealer did experience the shifting problem I was having. Also I have the extended Ford warranty. How do I handle the fact that I took the pan off? Are they cool about things like that?

Does anyone know of an exploded parts view of the 4R70W transmission. I need to be able to determine which part went bad. I am getting a little bit of a hard time from my local dealer.

Take the metal parts that you found in your tranny pan an take them to your dealer and say "Here! This is what I found in my transmission pan." If it's still under warranty they should fix it! Your warranty is not voided by taking the tranny pan off. Make em' live up to there name and fix your truck! Don't let them who-do you! If they don't do it, talk to your lawyer and I bet they'll get on the ball and fix your transmission then! Sorry for venting. But Ford's customer service really pisses me off!

Hi Cujet

Dealer giving you a hard time...WHY?

Tech. was able to duplicate problem...what does that mean?

Why did you take the tranny pan off?

Seems to me thats why you got the ext. warranty...Its just business. I know...been thru it. In your case...i just dont get it?

Seems to me you better have tow service. I dont think that tranny gonna last much longer.

Like Wolv said...take those pieces to your svc. guy...sit down with him...find out what happens now...should be interesting.

Seems to me i read somewhere that not all dealers have in house tranny techs. They just remove/install the new/rebuilt tranny. Nothing wrong with that, again just business.

BTW...might be a good idea to take some pics. of those pieces you found in pan.

Good luck...OT

Well, it's back to the dealer for the third and final time. I took the metal parts and spoke with the trans tech. He knew right away what the parts came from, The one way clutch! The extended Ford warranty I purchased covers towing and rental cars.

I will keep you guys informed on the progress.

They replaced the trans with an overhauled unit. It looks a little rough, with a slight dent in the pan and corrosion. It even has a little baked on dirt on the pan, Kinda like a trans from up north with 100K on it. The tech claims it comes right from Ford, as the other overhauled units they had used were troublesome.

However it works well and has been overhauled.

I'll keep you informed.
