Tranny shudder

I've got a similar problem, but mine doesn't occur from a stop.

Mine shudders like rumble strips between 35-45 mph. Just a brief rumble but enough to drive a person a bit nuts.

I don't know what the specific cause may be, but other posts seem to indicate the torque converter to be the culprit. Some others say the wheels may be out of balance or drive shaft out of balance amoung other things...but my hunch is the torque converter. The solution many say is to change the tranny fluid entirely using a flush or draining the tranny pan and the torque converter.

I'm heading to a transmission place tomorrow to go with the flush and see if it works. Good luck with yours.

There is a serice bulletin on the torque convertor. It requires a reprogram at the dealer. The SSM # is 15319.

Do yourself a favor & have them flush and fill with MERCON V. It calls for MERCON so tell them to humor you. My dealer did this 25 thousand ago to mine and it's been fine since. It did the same as your's before that.

MERCON V

Redlariet...

I had the change (flush and fill)done before I read your post. I asked if they could put in a synthetic fluid and they said not to do that...something about swelling up the seals and ruining the tranny. Anyway, they put in DEXRON lll which I understand to be compatable with MERCON which my tranny requires. It did away with the tranny shudderthough. I didn't know to ask them if they could put MERCON V in place of MERCON and still run properly. Can MERCON V be used in place of MERCON, but not the other way around? What does it do for the tranny with regards to operating performance?

What do people recommend for synthetic fluids? Redline and Amsoil are all I've heard about.

Thanks...
