Searching among gears

I purchased a 99XLT with automatic trans, 4.6 and 40000 miles. It is my first automatic truck. I notice the transmission is constantly searching for the correct gear at about 50 mph. Is this Normal? I really don't have any basis for comparison. Above or below 50 there is not problem, and I am not sure this is a problem.

Depends whether or not it's in Overdrive.

Changing the transmission fluid may help but it's likely that it's simply going in and out of overdrive.

50 MPH is a normal shift point depending on load. If you are on a flat road it should go into O/D at about 50 MPH but if you step on the gas or reach an incline, the engine doesn't produce enough torque at such a low RPM so the transmission downshifts.

You didn't give enough info.

What was your load?

Were you accelerating?

Uphill? Downhill?

Rolling hills?

Altitude high?

Rear Axle ratio (3.3?)

Big Tires?

Towing a trailer or pulling a kite?
