5 speed/ 2-3 noise

I have been experiencing the same thing when shifting as many other posters, the 2nd to 3rd metal sound. No other gear does this. One dealer checked it out and said they couldn' t fix it, even when I showed them the noise, its normal-come back if it gets worse...thanks alot. So before the warranty runs out I'm gonna have another look at it. My fear is that it will be a big problem somewhere down the road. Any input on this before I drop it off. Also, the problem of a mildew smell will be looked at. Any info would be appreciated as to other dealers handling the problem, etc. Thanks. 2000 4.2

Did you go with the extended warranty?
The 5-speed in our trucks is not as user friendly as most of us would like. I have seen nothing to pinpoint the exact cause. There has been things mentioned about syncros going. Maybe clutch wear.
The dealer wont do a fix unless they can diagnose a problem. If they can't diagnose it then we are screwed. That's why I mentioned the extended warranty. If you have it, hopefully the problem will be diagnoseable in the warranty period. If not, keep checking here, maybe some one will figure it out. Also put a few dollars away to cover the fix later.
That's all I got.

Thanks Wittom, but no on the extended warranty. Just have to see what happens this time around. By the way this is in the Berkshires-Adams. Small world.

Question

I'll have to check on the double clutch question. If the shift is slowed down there is no problem, only when you hit a quick shift.

Hey General. I'm down here in the Springfield area. I hike Greylock and others up that way. Nice area up there!

It kind of sucks. We get the 5-speed so we can have more control, but it's sloppy, so we have less.

I have checked around to see if anyone is planning on making a shifter for our trucks. I think a short throw shifter would be the most cost effective solution to this problem. Hurst says they should have one soon. I keep bugging them to see if they've come up with anything yet. I'm not going to hold my breath.

I think all we can do is try to preserve what we have untill other options become availible. I have been driving this truck for just over a year. I have got better at smooth(er) high(er) speed shifts.

I'm working at a well pump station right now and the operator for the city of bryan texas is a machinist. i'm gonna go to the junk yard and grab a old stick shifter and he's gonna cut it down and re-thread it as well as putting it on some special lathe and trimming it down. he says i can have it cut down to any lenght i want... i think i'll chop it off 3". He is doing this for me just for the hell of it... no charge. he said it wouldn't take that long. I'll slip him some money for being such a great guy about it tho.
