Any fluid that has a MERCON, but not MERCON V rating will be fine.

I think that Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is the best ATF on the market. It has the MERCON rating.

I don't have a recommendation for filters.

Ford says to not use a dual rated fluid in the E4OD. I really don't know why, but that is what Ford says.

You should check your owners manual or look at the dipstick. I think back then it was Mervon V.

The "dual rated" ATF that's not recomenned is Mercon/Mercon V compatable. You may find Mercon labeled and Mercon (Ford) Dextron III (GM).

Mobil 1 like Amsoil are universal and can be used in either application.

As for the filter, the one Ford uses is a Duetsch filter that you can either gte from Ford for close to $30 or go to an auto parts store like Autozone and get the exact same one for about $6-$8 less. I'm not sure anyone else makes one. The dealer even agreed that it's the exact same filter but that they can't usually compete with the auto parts stores on price.

The E4OD has never used MERCON V fluid. It was always MERCON.

Amsoil does claim to be MERCON and MERCON V. Mobil 1 does not. It only has the MERCON rating on the bottle.

Mark, I stand corrected. I'm looking at a bottle of Mobil 1 ATF and it's say's "....meets DEXTRON-III and MERCON requirements."

It's also says in a bullet point "Mercon qualified by Ford for use in 1988 and later Fords or whaere Type CJ or H is required. Also qualified for all cars and trucks specifying Mercon."

Ok, so Amsoil is universal. I double checked a bottle of it too.
