Transmission Type

I am a newbie to these message boards and I was looking for a little help. How can I identify which type of transmission I have? Is the information found in the VIN number, and if so how does one decode it? I have a 1998 F150 4x4 OffRoad (automatic) and the owners manual lists 2 types of transmissions. One requires Mercon and the other Mercon V. I'd like to make sure that I use the right fluid. Thanks.

Cool FinsUp-

Welcome !! There is a transmission code on the driver's side door jamb sticker. Most have code "U"; this is a 4R70W transmission. Your AT dipstick will also tell you what type of fluid to use; it's written right on it. Good luck.
