Question Trans shifts itself out of 4wd...

I have had a problem with my truck for a while. I have a 98 Expedition, it has 2wd,awd,4wd, and 4wd low. My problem is sometimes when I am in 4wd it will shift itself back and forth between 4wd and awd. I though I read that the fix may be some sensor, but I haven't looked into it. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be? Thanks.

Boost,

I could be anything from a defective GEM to a lose contact to a faulty switch.
Do you have access to a Sacn tester? Shop manual? If not I could give you some simple tests to help isolate the problem.

I don't have a tester or a manual. Any help would be apreciated.

I too, have the intermittant problem with my 98 Expedition shifting intermittantly back and forth between AWD and 4x4. I just had it in to the dealer and of course, they could find nothing wrong. The most recent event occurred last night climbing a snowy road. I was in 4wheel hi and it shifted once to AWD and back, uncommanded. It will do this intermittantly from either switch position, with no set pattern. It appears to me to be an electronic problem, but the dealership is clueless. I too, would appreciate any and all information. Thanks.

problem solved

My problem was solved with a new shift motor. No more uncommanded shifts back and forth between A4WD and 4WD.

problem solved.....NOT!

Three days of snow and today it did it again. The transmission shifted back and forth from 4WD to A4WD at least four times, while switch was in 4WD. I am about ready to dump this truck. GEM replaced, switch motor replaced. Maybe the switch next?
