Tranny Shifting

I have a 2001 XLT SuperCrew 4 X 4 with the 5.4L and 3.55 Limited Slip Axle. When putting the truck in drive or reverse after the truck has cooled you can feel what feels like the tranny parcually engaging and then a second later fully engage. This is really noticeable if you lightly have you foot on the brake. My theory has been that it is drive line slack it is taking out since it has the transfer case. I have never had an automatic 4WD so this is new to me and it has done it since I test drove it. Is this normal or is a potential problem. Also when you kick it down it really kicks down hard. I had a 2000 XLT Reg. Cab 4 X 2 with the 5.4L and regular axle and I don't remeber it doing it that hard but I had also installed a SuperChip so it was a little different. Appreciate any info.
