Unhappy I'm stupid...

Hey nothing like getting right to the point, eh?

Well, here's the deal guys, I have 36,000 miles on my truck so it's time for a tranny fluid change. I will probably have the dealer do a flush, where they get ALL the fluid out. I've been doing some research, and I see that many people use amsoil for the tranny. Is this pretty much the undisputed champ? Do tranny oils have rating like motor oil, if so which one do I get? I run Mobil 1 in the engine, so I want to go to FULL synthetics all the way around. Also, I have no idea about the differential. Does the fluid ever need to be replaced in it, if so do synthetics provide an advantage? While I'm changing the tranny fluid, should I go for one of these shift kits? Dso they wear the tranny out any quicker, and can they safely be use in conjunction with a superchip?

Thanks SO much guys, you will really be helping me out on this one, a part of my truck I have no clue about!

Chris

Cool

HI!... FORDMX : I prefer REDLINE synthetic fluids myself. AMSOIL is good too. Your truck comes with synthetic fluid in the tranny and rearend already. FORD's synthetic fluid is'nt that good though in my opinion. A shift kit actually will prolong the life of your tranny, not hurt it. Go with a TRANSGO or BAUMANN ENGINEERING shift kit. They are the two best.

No Ford transmission comes with synthetic fluid from the factory. 4R70W transmissions do have MERCON V, which is a synthetic blend. That's as close as it comes.

HI!... MARK : Yes I know it's a synthetic blend. But the majority of the blend IS synthetic. I remember reading somewhere that it's like a 65/35% blend with the synthetic being the 65%. To me that's synthetic.

Not sure about the mercon V dispute, but......

If you already have a superchip, adding a shift kit will do nothing for your truck. The way I understand it is that the chip already boosts the line pressure in the tranny electronically in order to improve shift quality. You could ask Mike Troyer from Superchips for confirmation on this......

I just changed the tranny fluid in my truck this weekend. I did it myself, avoiding the way inflated cost for a tranny flush. On the F150's, the torque converter has a drain plug in it, so you are able to drain it. By draining the trans, and the torque converter, you are getting as close to a full flush as you can. The only fluid you are not getting is the fluid in the lines, clutch packs, etc. (Which amounts to very little). By doing it myself, I saved about $120 off what a flush would have cost. And I think I did a good enough job to save the 120 bucks.

I'm sure there's about to be a lot of opinions on that don't need a shift kit if you have a Superchip comment. The fact is, they are very different and there is s big difference inhaving one over the other or both to complement the other. One is a mechanical modification, the other simply increases line pressure.

I think Mike Troyer's opinion is depending on what you want, a good shift kit like Transgo, is a great complement to the changes the chip makes. One step further, again depending on what you want, and what tranny you have, the Line Mod Valve along with the chip might do the trick; again, depending on what you want.

It's all about what you want.

Thumbs up shift kit

jleinweber

You could not be more wrong, I had my shift kit installed about 3 months before I got my superchip. A shift kit alone greatly improves the shifting of the transmission, it made the shifting feel more positive rather than feeling like the transmission was sliping into the next gear, but the shift kit didn`t eliminate the shifting delay programed into the computer, but the superchip did. both the superchip and the shift kit ( I used a Bauman shift kit ) work very well together and I would recomend them both to anybody. so don`t knock it until you try it.

Just my opinion.

Larry.

Wow! I had no idea........

Speeder & FamilyRide,

I had no idea! I had read a few times that a shift kit wouldn't make a difference with the chip, geuss I read wrong! Well, now that I know a shiftkit will make a difference with my chip, I'll be putting one in. Too bad I didn't know the right info about a shift kit before I did my tranny fluid change

Well, Thanks for clearing that up guys! Great info!

I installed the Superchip first before installing a TransGo Performance Shift Kit; the chip was a great mod, but the shift kit made a good thing great. I like the combo. As a matter of fact, I removed the chip yesterday to see how the shift kit would perform by itself. The shifting is not as firm as with the chip so I'll leave the chip out for the winter because I don't need to spin the all four wheels in overdrive!

The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked.

This would also mean that a stupid person is one that won't ask the question when they don't know the answer.
