You could do that but if you're already under there draining, you might as well replace the filter while you're there. Once you drop the pan (unless your 4x4 has the drain plug which negates what I'm saying) you'll likely find a lot of nasty stuff to get out of there.
Also, if you're going to the expense of going to Amsoil, wouldn't you want to put it in a clean as possible tranny?

Absolutely...new filter it will be!!
I just talked to a Ford performance shop about a Transgo shift kit. I currently have a "Superchip" in my 2001 Supercrew 4x4, and I think I will have the shift kit installed....so which means I will have the old conventional oil dropped and replaced with the Amsoil synthetic along with a new filter.
