99 F150

I am considering buying a 99 F150 Lariat 4x4, extended cab, short bed, w/ the 5.4. I was wondering how I can find out what transmission, and also what gears it has? Thanks for any help.

Cool

HI!... SSR : Welcome to F-150 ONLINE! That particular truck would have a 4R70-W tranny with a STERLING 9.75 rear end in rear with 3.55 gears (most likely). I beleive the 4X4's use a inverted LINCOLN IRS pumpkin (8.8)

I forgot to mention it has the towing package, dont' know if that matters or not. But I'm wondering how the trans would hould up towing my mustang on an open trailer, approx. 5,000 pounds. Also how would it hold up if i put the eaton and lightning intake on it?

HI!... SSR : A f-150 5.4, EC, 4X4 is rated to pull up to 7700LBS. So you should be o.k towing yor trailer and MUSTANG. If I were you I would go with a MAGNACHARGER (SEE SUPERCHARGER SECTION). The LIGHTNING supercharger assemblt WILL bolt on to your 5.4 but will be a real pain to install and VERY, VERY expensive. Plus the 4R70-W tranny won't like it. Trust me I know. I broke my 4R70-W tranny because of too much H.P and I'm still naturally asperated! LOL! Plus you have a transfer case and it would break a lot quicker than the tranny with a supercharger.

I heard that the 7700 pounds includes the weight of the truck. I coudl be wrong though. Also were they're any F150s that had the 4R100 trans?

HI!... SSR : No the 7700lbs is what the truck can tow besides it's own weight, trailer weight. Some of the F-150's did have the 4R100 trannys. They are usually CALIFORNIA vehicles because of emissions purposes. Some others did get them, but it's rare in a F-150. All LIGHTNING's get the 4R100 trannys but they are stronger internaly than the regular 4R100's. If you look on your driver's door jam there will be a vehicle stats sticker. Under tranny, you should have a "U" I beleive for the 4R70-W tranny. Another way to check is that the 4R70-W does'nt come from the factory with a tranny fluid drain plug in the tranny pan, the 4R100 does.

for the gears, look at the axle code on the door sticker and reference that.

Only the '97-'99 F250's (Lightduty) and '99+ Lightnings got the 4R100 trans. In 2000, Ford changed it to F150 7700 Series pkg. Which gets the 4R100 trans, stiffer frame, stiffer suspension, larger brakes, 3.73 gear, and those dumb 7-lug wheels.

Lastly, I'm not exactly positive if they came with the 9.75 rear as an option. But I have the 10.25 rear (same as the Superduty's).

Just to toss my combo into the 'wicket'. I've got the 4r100 or e4od (code E) in my rig (no drain plug). '97 F150 4x4 SC, SB, tow package, 3.55 LS rear (code H9). It only has a GVWR of 6250#. Mine was not a Californina rig, but was sold in Canada. I "think" it was built in the US. The VIN is 1FTEX18L8VKC*****. I saw a post awhile ago that had a link to a web site that listed what all the codes are for the VIN. Sorry, I don't remember where or when I saw that.

Opps, I forgot to say the 97-98's had the E4OD's. Which is basically the 4R100. In the 99+, they're now called 4R100 trans.
