who gets 4R100 trans?

I have a 2000 F-150 7700 5.4 . I ordered it without the tow package because I was going to put a heavier than factory receiver hitch on it , a Valley 900lb. tongue, 9000lb.trailer weight, which I did. Just recently discovered that some F-150's have the S.D. 4r100 instead of the 4r70. I got the 4r70. I would think the 7700 would get the stronger trans. Did I get the 4r70 because I didn't order the tow pkg. I tow an 8000 lb. trailer with this truck, should I worry about the 4r70 not holding up?
Wishing I had the 4r100.

My Ford dealer said that the 4.2 V6 and 4.6 have the 4R70W and the 5.4, 6.8 V10, and 7.3 Powerstroke get the 4R100.

Wink

I've got a 97, 5.4, 4x4 (non ORP), tow package, and I have the 4r100 or e4od I think it is........ (trans code "E").

With the tow package, you get more then just the frame hitch. You also get the seven pin plug for trailer brakes, ?bigger? tranny cooler, brake controller wiring and probably some other things too.

My factory hitch has a max cap. of 1,000 tongue weight and 10,000 trailer, which is way more rating then my rig is supposed to tow. You said your's is only 900/9000, which isn't much of a difference, but lower non the less......

Don't know for sure, but maybe the tow package also includes the 4r100 tranny (I was under the impression that it came in the 5.4 4x4 models)

The factory hitches I saw on the in stock trucks was rated for 500/ 5000 without a load equalizer. The 1000/10000 might be the rating when using a load eaqualizer. Anyway, the 7700 pkg. included super cooling and electrical, bigger brakes, heavy shocks and springs, heavy-duty frame, high capacity wheels and LT245 tires, and snowplow prep. The class III trailer tow group lists 7-pin wiring harness, (which I didn't need), Class III frame hitch, HD cooling and elect., HD shocks. It just does'nt seem to make sense not to put the 4R100 in with all this other heavy stuff, when they do put it in other F-150's. I think I should have bought a super duty. The price would be about the same as my 7700 was.

Thumbs up Scotto:

That makes more sense for your hitch then. That rating I gave was when using the distribution hitch and bars. I would not want to tow anything over 4000 lbs without distribution bars anyway, but that's just me......

Yeah, you gotta wonder why they would have all that HD stuff and not put in the beefier tranny. Probably along the same lines as Ford's reasoning for the "extra cooing" radiator and that the punny 1" one was "adequate" for towing................ Must be saying that the 4r70 is adequate for towing as well.............

I just know that the 4r100 holds 3 more quarts of fluid then the 4r70. That alone will help keep the temp down.

All superduties get the 4R100, all Lightnings do, after that, whether you get it or not depends mostly on whether you have certain emmissions packages, the 4R70 does not meet specs in some states, so in those states (mostly northeast and I think California) you get the 4R100 in an F-150.

Thanks for all the replies, I really like the truck. It pulls my tractor around just fine, 8000 lbs. gross trailer wt. with no load equalizers.

Factory Tech, Your comment about the 4R100 meeting certain emmissions standards in some states, IE: California, I can only tell you that I have a 99 Expedition EB 4X4, it has the 4R100, I have a friend who bought a 2001 F150 SC 4X4 with the 5.4, he has the 4R70. Both vehicles purchased from the same dealer in So. California.!! Obviousely two years apart...

I have seen E4OD mentioned a couple of times. Is the E4OD another way of referring to the 4R100 or is it a different animal altogether?

The E4OD is the old name for the 4R100. Ford did some upgrades to the transmission in 1998-1999 and renamed it the 4R100.

I think it goes like this:

Expeditions with the 5.4 get it
F150's with the 7700# pkg get it
Lighting of course
Superduty's/Excursion's
Some/Most/A Few California trucks ??

Family Ride: I think your right, especially the last line, which explains it all. I love standards...

Cool

Scotto, I think you have a miss build. My 7700 has the 4r100 and I think the emission standards in Canada are less stringent. It doesn't make sense to have the extra tow capacity, the seven bolt rims, heavy duty frame, brakes, springs, torsion bars, ect and a smaller tranny. Check the ford site for vehicle specs.

On another note, have you ever checked your wheel lug wrench. Does it actually fit your 7 bolt rims. The nuts are smaller than the normal f150.
