Either reverse or drive not both

Either reverse or drive not both

So I have an 2001 F-150 short bed with 186,000 miles on it recently it started acting up on me and by what I mean acting up is either I have reverse and no drive or have drive and no reverse I've already checked all my fuses done on my spark plugs checked all my liquids any ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you ahead of time

Please be more specific - when you say "no drive" or "no reverse" what does it do - act like it's in neutral? Do you have manual 2nd or manual 1st when you have "no drive"? Is the shift linkage loose? MLPS?

It isn't the MLPS. Nothing electrical could cause this.

What transmission is in the truck? If you don;'t know, what engine is in the truck?
