4r70w issues

I have a 1995 2wd f-150 with the 5 liter and the 4r70w. I’m pretty mechanically inclined and understand how a transmission works but have zero experience on working on them. My truck has a severe hardshift from first to second like I’m getting hit by a semi. Also the truck seems to not really know what it wants to do gear selection wise. When traveling at a quarter throttle the truck will up shift into a higher gear and bog the truck out below 1500 rpm’s I have to give it more throttle to get the truck to down shift back into the gear it was in and apply power. Also a couple times the truck has gotten stuck in between 3rd and overdrive causing the truck to free spool. I have to slow towards 45mph for the trans to decide what it wants to do and shift into a gear. I have replaced the throttle position sensor, and both vss. Although after changing the vss in the rear end my speedometer now waves over 65. I just can’t seem to figure this out it doesn’t seem like the trans it self is bad it just seems like what ever is controlling it is having issues. Anybody on here have any experience in a 4r70w doing stuff like this? Any help will be greatly appreciated I just don’t want to for the 3,000 over for a trans rebuild. Thanks a ton guys!

Have you checked the OBD1 for trouble codes? If there's an electronic issue with the trans, it will set codes. I believe O'Reilly's has a compatible reader, the one here does. You can also check them with a paper clip or jumper wire and a 12 volt test light.

The 95 should have 3 digit codes.

I’ve checked the codes no transmission codes. I have a down stream o2 code and air injection code because I’m not running an smog pump because it started to seize up and was squealing bad

Have u tried to replace the input and output shaft speed sensors ? I had a very similar issue with mine and after replacing them it helped the issue

Huh 🤔 Iv also seen this issue when the transmission torque converter clutch solenoid is beginning to go bad , it starts to get weak and has a hard time regulating The fluid pressure to properly shift from one gear to another but typically it’s not just one gear that it has issues with but wouldn’t hurt to check the solenoids , I believe there is 4 of them , I could be wrong but I think there is a 1-2,3-4,reverse and overdrive , could also possibly be the servos about 2 yr ago I had one of the snap rings break and went into my valve body partially restricting the proper flow or trans fluid so it caused my truck to have a delay in shifting and harsh almost slamming into 2nd gear , im just throwing some ideas out there I could very well be wrong but doesn’t hurt to bounce ideas

I’ve checked the fluid and smelled the fluid it doesn’t smell or look burnt. I have changed the tps and both speed sensors. It has a hard shift from first to second I’m assuming it’s a broken spring. But once the trans is warm it just seems to fall out of gear I’ll let off of the throttle when it does and it will down shift into a lower gear then back into the gear I was in. Seems to do it in every gear

What an AMAZING collection of misinformation!

The torque converter clutch solenoid does not have anything to do with shifting gears. All it does it lock and unlock the torque converter clutch.

There are two shift solenoids, the torque converter clutch solenoid, and a pressure control solenoid.

I suspect a broken spring in the 1-2 accumulator.
