98 4.6 f150 lurching in drive and completely stalls in reverse

Like the title says..truck runs smooth in park, but as soon as you pull it down into drive it lurches and surges almost as if the converter is locking and unlocking constantly. And if you shift to reverse it stalls out and shuts the truck off. Any ideas where to start ? Thanks

So i drove the truck up the driveway today and i noticed that the truck would kinda go forward smoothly, but if you tried to put the brakes on with it moving the truck wants to keep going and will bog down as if it was a straight drive and you forgot to push the clutch in to stop while you were putting on the brakes..reverse still pretty much chokes the motor down instantly and shuts it off....again still no codes

Something has failed inside the transmission. Rebuild time, plus new converter.

Low trans fluid could cause this. So could a stuck converter clutch control valve, a leaking seal on the input shaft, or a bad converter clutch solenoid. It is also possible that the torque converter has failed.
