07 4R75E Jmod or not????
07 4R75E Jmod or not????
2007 FX4, 5.4 3v, 4R75E transmission, 3.55 gearing, it does have the SC FP-1865 "canned" programming at present (I use the 87 octane /4K tow mode I do), there are no issues with the transmission other than it's coming up on 73,xxx miles, I want to do a fluid change with filter, install the Sonnax 76507F-01K reinforcement kit that adds support to the separator plate under the 2-3 accumulator, ... and I wondered about a mild J-mod while I'm at it. I have pics of when I did this to my '01 Mercury Grand Marquis, that 2-3 accumulator left some good marks on the separator plate but it wasn't bent that I could see (though I'll admit I didn't try a sanding block test) and that Sonnax kit was so easy to install. I know there are "Tuff Plates" out there, but I decided on the Sonnax alternative as it just works whether any other mods are made or not. I forget just exactly what the FP-1865 did / does but it did stop "searching" in and out of OD. Transmission seamed more responsive, so the question of a J-mod may be mute? I also ordered that OD circlip just to have on hand.

I did order a KO192 "TUFF" Plate with the "snubber" cap as well, I'll check the size of stock 1-2 feeder hole, be it 0.073" or 0.092", but my thinking is this way I'll have it "on hand" to use and I'll just save the OEM separator plate along with the Sonnax reinforcement for the time being. From all I can tell, the KO192 has the smaller 0.073" hole ... where the KO92 has a larger 0.092" hole ... but otherwise they are the same as I understand it. Depends on what I find OEM is.

I've done some figuring, studying, I think I have decided to use the tuff plate when I do this, and since I have the Sonnax reinforcement, use it too on top of the tuff plate, but I may not then use the "snubber" cup that comes with the tuff plate.
My concern was that the Super Chips FP-1865 both altered the shifting timing (ended some hunting and slightly extended rpms in each gear) ... and I believe it raised trans shift pressures some. For some reason figures like 20 or 30 psi stick in mind but that seems light.

NO
comments?
Well, I put the truck to stock 12-18-20, downloaded from Super Chips and then opened the "SPARK" updater and updated the 1865 programmer. I put the updated 87 tune back in the truck, then. Last night we took a long local drive looking at Christmas Lights, and I leaned into it some to refresh my memory as to how it shifted as usually I'm pretty conservative in my throttle activation. As a result I have decided to just do a fluid & filter change and I'll clean the pan well, etc. I'll add the drain plug kit I made while the pan is off too. I know there are excellent chances the OEM separator plate has been marked by the 2-3 accumulator contact ... and I have a new OD servo retainer clip for it I will install. I'll change to the Tuff plate after comparing to the OEM plate holes and very likely put the Sonnax reinforcement on top of the TUFF plate as it can't hurt.
Then I'll put her together, refill with the fresh MerconV, and call it done ...
... when I catch a warm day in February or March.
Edited 12-31-2020: SuperTuff plate with the 2-3 accumulator snubber came today, I just need to catch the right weather now. I just need to compare some holes. The truck shifts fine as is when I step into the throttle, this is gonna be more like a "service" and "upgrade". Pretty sure I'll leave the springs in and not do a lot of drilling as it stands. If I do any J-mod things ... it'll be mild . Biggest thing is to compare holes and make sure the Tuff plate's holes are at least as big as OEM and install the thicker plate.
Edited 07-29-2021: My Goodness ... how the time flies, I've had some other items pop up to deal with, but the plan is still to do the holes in the Super Tough plate, might install the round Sonnax 2-3 accumulator re-inforcement plate too (and not use the included "snubber"), replace the OD C-clip, keep all accumulater springs, and I've gotten a package of 10 of the hard plastic check ***** from Sonnax. I've checked the S-T plate, checked holes using number drill bits. I have filter and a case plus of Mercon V too I must say I haven't driven it much since then, so no harm, it's running like a "well oiled top". Oh yeah, the drain in the pan too. Truck only has like 76K miles, has towed maybe 40 miles total, trans temps typically 160 or so.
I also have an auxiliary electric pusher fan I am going to add for those hot days sitting in traffic at the drive through, and I'm thinking maybe some better Powerstop rotors and pads.

Any updates on your truck? I'm looking at almost this exact scenario. I have a Tuff plate and the sonnax repair/stiffener plate and not sure which way to go with this. I think the sonnax plate is a better "forever" fix, but a lot more work to install. I also want to do a JMOD except for removing any springs. Did you ever do this?
