4R100 Trans

Hey all,
My understanding has always been that a "U" code in the 97/03 generation stood for the 4R70W trans, and an "E" stood for the 4R100. Only a few F150's actually got the 4R100, typically just the 7700 lb package behind a 5.4. So I've seen some door tags that are confusing. Particularly on some '97s and '98s, I think. They'll have the 4.6, but will have the "E" code for trans. Do those trucks have 4R100's? Or did "E" mean something different then? Thanks.

In 97/98, that was the E4OD, the 4R100 replaced it and is essentially the same. This is similar to the previous generation where the 4R70W was just an updated AODE. I don't think you are going to find an E4OD behind a 4.6 except in the F250 light duty, which was replaced by the F150 7700 in 99.

That's what I thought, too, but in particular I found a '97 single cab stepside 4.6 Lariat with an "E" trans. I seem to remember something about trucks built and delivered to California requiring a different trans for emissions reasons?? Could that be it? Later.

Sorry, my bad. The truck I described does have the 5.4, but it is still a '97 single cab stepside F150, not a heavy duty model.

In 97/98, a lot of 5.4 trucks and vans had the E4OD. I think it was due to a supply issue on the 4R70W.

The E40D/4R100 was never mated to the 4.6L from the factory in any vehicle.
