4wd engaged on its own

4x4 stuck 2008

Here is what happened
I pulled into a parking lot turned the wheel and my 4x4H engaged on its own, Light came on. I hit the interior switch to 4x4l and 2wd but nothing happened it wouldnt even light the other options.. Did the neutral trick and back up but nothing.
Did my research and started with the solenoid. I did find two breaks in my vacuum lines to the driver side hub. Repaired and installed a new solenoid. Disconnected the battery but nothing worked. Still stuck in 4x4h with the light on. The switch will not even light up when i switch to 2wd and 4x4l.
I removed the transfer case motor and turned the pin to 2wd even hit the motor with a hammer and had my son turn the switch. Nothing happened.
My temp solution.
I jumped the vacuum lines to each other to disengage the front hubs. They are free spinning now.
I still think the transfer case is in 4x4h. When i turn the pin in the case to 2wd i hear it shift. All is good. The problem is when i install the motor back on the only way to line the motor and pin shaft up is to put the motor in a vertical position then need to rotate the motor down to line the bolt holes up i think its switching back to 4x4h????
Do you think my transfer case is in 4x4h?
If the tranfer case is still in 4wd but i have the hubs disengaged do you think i will cause more issues?
Is it the switch at the interior?
Is it the transfer motor?

Is this how a 4x4 works?
Turn the interior switch
Vacuumed solenoid stops vacuum at the hubs and locks the axles.
Simultaneously the interior switch is engaging the tranfer case into your choice of position
Am i missing something else?

Toyman, I am NOT an expert on 4WD systems, but it's my understanding that a vacuum leak in the system will cause 4WD to engage. So, I think you need to put it back in its original configuration and look for another vacuum leak.

If you have the hubs disengaged, I don't see how you'd hurt anything, but others may have different (and better) opinions.

And, Toyman, I removed the other two threads you started on this subject. Please don't create multiple threads on the same topic - it leads to confusing responses that can waste your time and cost you additional money.

Check your transfer case shift motor, heard these can cause it as well.
