broken dipstick transmission

1997 F-150 - I may not be describing this properly, so please be patient. My transmission fluid dipstick broke and I think some other fluid got mixed in with my transmission fluid. The transmission is running hard. Is it possible to do a flush and fill on my trans (replace filter) or has this liquid (possibly water) caused irreparable damage?

Drop the pan, clean it out, replace the filter. Drain the torque converter (it has a drain plug), button it back up, and refill with fresh Mercon V fluid. Unless it's damaged, reuse the factory pan gasket.
