2000 4r70w won't engage first

Good morning all..

Just recently I began to have some shifting issues. Going from p to r, it engages immediately. P to d it revs up a little and doesn't engage unless I tap the gas lightly a couple times. Driving around town it shifts perfect.

On Highway, when attempting to pass, it shifts out of od and revs up and slams into gear.

Fluid level seems erratic. Can't seem to get a reading on the dips tick because it's always saying above full when I know that's not the case.

What are some common things I need to look at. I'm basically prepared for it needing an overhaul/replaced, but if it's something cheaper then I'd like to know. Thanks in advance

This sounds like the forward clutch having trouble engaging. Could be a lip seal or check ball, but something somewhere is letting pressure by.

Darrin,

Where is the lip seal located at? I know the check ball is located in the valve body. What's the best way to remedy these issues.

Also, this morning, I can no longer cycle OD on or off. Which, I'm assuming, is the trans way of letting me know of a problem code wise? Am I on the right track?

Both items are located in the forward clutch drum inside the transmission.

Ok. Thank you, sir.
Not the news I wanted to hear. Seems as if I have some internal issues going on. Thanks again.
