Hey Robin,

Is your truck experiencing any kind of transmission problems that you can discuss? Are the shift points occuring normally, and had you cheked the fluid level or smell prior to taking it to the dealer?

Do you run the truck hard or do you tow anything behind it? What engine are you running and what gears are in the rear? Need more info to help.

I haven't heard of major problems on the 4R70W tranny but you can probably get much more of a response by asking specific type questions on this thread.

I used to be an automatic transmission mechanic but that was in the late '70s and early '80s and it's been at least 10 years since I have been into one.

I will be glad to help you but you need to answer a few of the questions above so I can better understand you situation.

Robin,

Thanks for the info, that help with a diagnosis. Some metal in the pan can be okay but it should be very fine and not chunks. There is a certain amount that is okay but telling you how much is not easy describe. It just takes experience to see it and to feel it and then make a determination as to where it came from.

I used to work for AAMCO and that metal in the pan trick is the oldest one. However, don't get me wrong, metal in the pan can be very serious if it continues and therefore one cannot say that it is no big deal. Since your truck has low miles, I would venture to guess that it's just bushing wear and normal break-in and not serious.

Sounds like you are probably okay but just keep a close ear on noises, shifting problems, overheating and slipping. If all that stuff checks out then go ahead and have the fluid changed again like the dealer recommended but try and keep a sample of the old fluid for your own analysis, if it comes to that.

Good Luck,
DaveMan

Unhappy metal in transmission pan

Robin

I have a 2001 F150 4.6 with a 4R70W transmission, at about 5000 miles i had a shift kit installed. When the pan was removed it had a lot of brass particles in the pan, some of this was due to normal break in and some of it i think, is because ford sets these transmissions up to shift soft that it causes extra wear in the transmission. You might want to consider installing a shift kit, it will help your transmission live longer.

I hope this helps.

Larry.

Hey Speeder,

First of all I wanted to thank you for your advice on the y collector which I have now installed and am seeing significant improvements in the low end power and MPG.

Anyway, you mentioned above that you installed a shift kit, what is it's purpose?

Thumbs up Shift Kit

BAJANBLACK

Im glad the Y collector worked for you as well as it did for me. Now about the shift kit, the transmissions in our trucks are set up to shift very soft to give it a car like shift and feel. This soft shift causes excess heat and added wear to the clutches in the transmission. A shift kit will firm up the shifts and reduce or stop any slipping that you might feel, it will also reduce transmission temperature so it will last longer. I have a Bauman shift kit in my transmission set on level 4, it`s not a hard shift, but nice and firm, the harder you get into the throttle the better it shifts. You should try a shift kit on your truck, i think you would like it.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions let me know.

Larry.
