5.4 5spd auto on a 4.6 4spd

I hate to say it but I love my truck and honestly I don't think the 4.6 is a little under powered because I don't drive around with my foot to the floor all day. The damn automatic transmission with 4 gears sucks tho. I feel like i'm driving one of those crappy Nissan Altima snowmobile 1spd transmissions. Is it possible to put the 5.4l 5spd auto tranny on my truck. I feel like it would make a world of a difference.

The problem with installing a different transmission is that you are going to need to make a custom computer to make it shift. How good are you at designing and building a microprocessor and the custom software to make it work? Do you know enough about clutch energies to be able to calibrate the software so that the transmission will live?

Never seen a 5 speed on a 5.4 except in a Super Duty.

ok what about the ford mustang 5spd automatic that comes on their 4.6l. Shouldnt that be a direct bolt up to my 4.6. I assume I will have to get it rebuilt to handle more.

You will need the computer and wiring from the Mustang, too. Will that computer run your engine? I don't know the answer to that.

it'd be easier to find a wrecked truck/mustang and swap the motor/trans/computer all at the same time.

Damn. Thought it might be easier than that. It's all good tho. I guess i'll just keep puttin mods on it until I can step up to the big boys and get a F250 or a Platinum F150 4x4 .
