Down shifting issue, high RPM, lock up maybe, also hard shifting?

So I just bought a 2001 F150 King Ranch 4x4 with a 5.4L. The truck has 225K miles on it and the transmission and I have noticed when ever I am coasting down to a stop the transmission is not down shifting properly.

This is how it works: I am going along (usually over 45) and then when I let off the gas to coast down to a stop light (or brake) I can feel the transmission down shifting very firmly until it gets down to 1st. Then once in first I can come to a complete stop and the RPMS sit at 1200 RPM's and I can feel the drive train really pushing the truck forward. Then after being stopped for 15-20 seconds the trans makes a noticeable thunk and the rpm's drop to around 500 and it feels like it normally should.

Anyone know what the deal is here? The fluid is very brown, but I am afraid to change it as last time I did that to a truck I ended up putting a new trans in 3 weeks later.

That's an engine problem. There is nothing in the trans that could make the engine idle too high. Fix whatever is wrong with the engine and the trans will be fine.
