5.4 trans for 4.6 swap
5.4 trans for 4.6 swap
adrianspeeder did a thread on transmission types. I have a 98 5.4 trans that I want to use in a 97 4.6 truck. It looks like they are both E4OD type. Is it a direct swap and should I use the 4.6 torque converter or the 5.4? I found a cheap 97 truck that needs a trans. Do not want to get it if my trans will not work. Also the answer I get from you guy's, I will file in my truck book.
It's most likely a 4r100. some times they put 4r75w's behind the 5.4 in vans and expeditions. The 4r75w is a beefed up 4r70w found behind the 4.6. As far as I know the 4r70 and 75 will fit behind a 4.6. The driveline behind the 4r70 and 75 in longer than the one behind 4r100 and the tranny side flange is different.
Did it change when they went to PI's? More power put it over tolerance?

The 4R100 has a turbine speed sensor and an output speed sensor. The computer needs those inputs. The E4OD doesn't have either one.
It didn't "go over tolerance." A tolerance is an allowable discrepancy in a specification. For example, if you specify a torque of 100 lb-ft +/- 10 lb-ft, the 10 lb-ft is the tolerance.
There is no tolerance on a transmission's torque rating. There is just an upper limit. The E4OD was replaced by the 4R100 in part to raise the torque rating. I forget what the E4OD was rated for, but the 4R100 is rated for 1000 lb-ft AFTER the torque converter multiplies the engine torque.
4.6 to 5.4 Engine Swap
I have a 2001 Ford F150 King Ranch Super Cab (4 door) with 2004 Lincoln Navigator 5.4 DOHC Intech 32V. The engine was installed in 2005 and was removed from a 2004 Lincoln with less than 100 miles on the odometer. The engine is backed up by a 4R100 transmission and 9.75 ring/pinion 3.73 ratio rear axle. The truck also has a true dual exhaust system with X pipe and number 50 mufflers. Great truck has been trouble free for over seven years. HP went from 210/220 to 300, torque from 290 to 355.
