Question how many quarts go in to pan?

Going to drop trans pan. Along with replace trans filter.

It's a 4r70w in a 2002 f150 with a 5.4. It's got 179,000 miles.

I don't know if or when it was last done.

....never mind... I'm not sure. I'd say 6 quarts would cover it.

I know my E4OD takes 6 qts for a pan drain.. The E4OD/4R100 seems like it has a bigger pan than the 4R70 from pics I've seen...

Anyway, just try to capture as much of the fluid as you can and pour it into qt containers if you happen to have them.. Or a 5 qt jug, etc. then you'll know how much came out.

Good luck!

Mitch

The book says 5 quarts.

With 179k I'd seriously consider doing a complete exchange.

If you can drop the pan you can flush 16 quarts through it and be 100% better off. Easy job.

Well it's done. Boy is that a messy job to do. Guess what I found in my pan????? Wait for it.............. yellow plunger!!!!!!!!! So I was right in guessing that it has never been done. Not that there was anything wrong. Bought 5 QTS for it,,, took 4 QTS based on the Haynes manual and the dipstick.

They should sell a shop full of equip when you buy a vehicles as one package deal!!!!!

As I was under my truck I noticed one of the end links on my sway bar was missing the bushings on both ends and it was making noise to boot. drivers side!!!

The plunger just means the pan has never been dropped - or they left it in. It's very possible the fluid has been exchanged with a machine before.
