Are all 4R75E interchangeable?

Looks like ill be in need of a new trans for my 04. Will any used 4r75e from a f150 work? Any difference from a 04-08 trans that would make it not plug and play?

edit -I have put a 08 4r75e in my 04 and it was a direct bolt in, no problems.

What happened to the trans? If things let loose in the transmission and there is contamination in the transmission lines you will want to replace the lines, radiator and trans cooler. If the trans is in good shape you might want to get it rebuilt or exchange it at a trans rebuilder. You will want to keep the same trans 4R75E. The E is for electronic and makes it incompatible with a 4R70W.

no 3rd and od, the direct clutches are done and there is metal all in the pan.

I just want to know if any 4r75e will work. Or is there any difference if it came from a 4.6l or 5.4l engine or different model year.

I think they are pretty mutch the same, are you going to do the swap yourself.

I think I would do something like this. But I am in a Daily Driver and may have to make different decisions.

I just want to add some experience that hopefully you won't have to go through. I had a problem with a transmission once and had it rebuilt, but they did not get rid of the contraniments in the fluid, If it's in the pan it is probably in the TC and everything else. When mine was rebuilt is was never the same, never smooth, always vibrated and eventually failed again, this was a Ranger not an F150. So if I had to do it agian I would replace everything, not just flush, and put it a rebuilt transmission. If you go the junkyard route, which is fine, just make sure to get all the bad stuff out, maybe add an in line filter.

Sounds like you broke your stubby shaft inside your trans.

I think I will bring it to a friend with a lift to do it for me. He probably wont charge more then $200 to swap it.

Thanks for the input. I will definitely get a new trans cooler and make sure to flush the lines and put a new filter in the trans.

can you give me some more information on this? Is this something I can get to around the valve body, or does the trans need to come out? I was crossing someone and on the 2-3rd shift there was a loud bang and that was it for 3rd and od working again. So something breaking sounds more like what happened then just the clutches giving out without warning. 127k on the truck, trans always worked great and no towing from me for the last ~30k miles since I got the truck.

I believe the 4R75E was only used with a 5.4 3 valve, the 4.6 used a 4R70W or 4R70E depending on year.

Im getting more and more confused the more research I do. Everything I read contradicts the last thing ive read.

The wiki page for the AOD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AOD_transmission says the 4r75e was used in the 04/05 5.4 3v. Then a bit under it it says the 4r75w was used in 04-08 5.4 3v. (and some 4.2/4.6 engines)

Why is there so much misinformation about this?

4r75e change e150 2wd

I have a 2006 e150 van with a bad transmission 4r75e 4.6
found a newer transmission year 2012 e250 4r75e with 4.6
I needed to know any electrical or other issues before I buy the 2012 trans.
any information will be helpful

not sure if it will help, but I just put a 08 4r75e into my 04 and it was exactly the same, direct bolt in.

The 2012 trans will not work. Completely different.

You sure about that? He's talking about vans here, not F-150's. I show that both the 2006 and 2012 vans with 4.6 use 4R75W. The vans never got the 6R80.
