Transmission Temps.

Need some help, I recently added an EDGE CTS to my 01 Expedition. Temps have been running around 170 to 185 depending on outside temps and how we are using it. Last week my wife was driving it to carry a bunch of kids to a bowling party. Outside temp in the 90s. Trans temp went up and peeked at 200. Yesterday with temps in the 80s and driving up the mountain out of Cherokk on 19, it got up to 210. Based on my research 210 seems to be on the higher side but no extreme. What kind of temps are other seeing off there factory trans temp sensors? I have heard this road is about 7% grade.

IMHO...150 is ideal, at 180 you are getting warm, at 200+ you are hot.

These temps are not too bad. I am not sure what the Expeditions are like but I assume they are pretty similar to the F150's mechanically. If that is the case your trans cooler (if you even have one) is pretty small and it is mounted on the passenger side right behind the front bumper where it gets poor air flow. You can take that out and add one from an F250 Super Duty that hangs from the middle of the upper rad support. It is bigger and sees a lot more air. Mine works really well.

Every automatic transmission has a transmission cooler.

Temperature? I'm not sure what you're asking. The transmission was designed to run at 170-180°F. It can run much hotter than that without damage, that's the ideal temperature.

Is that what you mean?

That is pretty much what I wanted to know, what is considered normal.

Thanks. I guess what I should have said was external trans cooler. The cooler inside the radiator tank is not enough when you are towing or working your truck.
