1997 F350 Tranny Issues

I have a 1997 F350 5.8 2wd with automatic transmission. I'm not too sure what model transmission I have, but I'm checking into that this evening. The truck has 111,000 miles.

My problem is, sometimes the transmission seems to be slipping in drive and also, it shifts late and hard at times. It doesn't do this every time I drive it. Then today, while at the hardware store, the truck moved about 10ft while I was in the store. Sometimes when I turn the key to start the engine, I get nothing, until I bump the shift lever to make sure it's in park.

Does this mean my tranny is going out? Is it a linkage problem? Maybe electrical?

Any help is appreciated.

Lonnie

If you have overdrive, it's a E4OD. If not, it's a C6.

Loose or out of adjustment linkage, and/or an issue with the neutral safety switch/transmission range sensor.

When was the last time the fluid and filter was changed?

I'm pretty sure it is an E4OD. 1996 was the last year for the C6.
My guess is that the shift linkage is loose where it bolts to the steering column. Put your head under the dash on the driver's side. Look up the column. There are two Torx head bolts there, or should be there, sometimes they fall out. Tighten them and it should work a lot better.
