Cool not!!!!!!!!

HI!... RUDY C : Ford uses a reusable tranny pan gasket on the 4R70-W, if that's what you have? I've had my tranny pan off several times and never had a leak because of it. When you do decide to take the tranny pan off you will most likely see a small plastic plug with a stick, sticking out of it. Don't worry! This is a plug for the dipstick before it is installed at the factory. Instead of ford taking the time to remove it and throw it out, they simply push it into the tranny and forget about it. If this will be the 1st time your tranny pans is coming off them nmost likely you will find it. If you do just remove it and throw it out. Hope this helps you out.

The gasket is reusable and they're pretty good about not leaking. THe torque spec on a 4R100 is 10-16 ft/lbs, should be similar if you have a 4R70.

Fellas I just was left a 1999 XLT F150 with a 4.6L...Stock 17in. alum. wheels... Due to a Death in the Family.... 3 weeks ago...

I have changed all the Fluids to Synthetic.... except for the tranny..... I have never owned a Ford before.... But I am going to keep this Super Truck for a Interstate Missile...

I would like to change the Tranny fluid to Synthetic as well... but have no clue what tranny is in the Truck....

It has 1st-2nd-3rd-OD.... is it a 4R70W or E4OD...???
Is there a model # stamped on the Tranny somewhere...???

I don't have any info on the truck besides the Title and Insur. papers....

Any input would be helpful....Thanks...

Congrat, and sympathy as appropriate.

You have a 4R70W. That was the only auto available on 4.6L in 99. It uses Mercon V fluid. It is available in full or blend synthetic.

TIGER... THANKS....

Since it was installed with Mercon V.... a basic Synthetic....
Do I need to change the fluid......???

The truck has basically all Highway miles..... 32K..... back and forth to Dallas.....

Is Mercon V a Quality Synthetic.... as Mobil 1 - Amsoil - RedLine...???

What are the chances the full synthetic type Mercon V, was poured into the 99 trannies...???

If it already has a good synthetic in it.... I'm not going to waste my money and change it....

Thanks again for you help....

Mercon V is the spec name of the oil not the brand name. Like 5W30 is made by several companies, so is Mercon V. I have only been able to find Mobil 1 in Mercon. I'm sure they have it in V also. Its probably the same thing in this case since both are synth. I think the Mobil 1 I've been seeing has just been on the shelf longer than they have been rating it V. Anyway, You can use any brand that says Mercon V. I have seen Valvoline and Quaker State both have blends that meet Mercon V.

I am sure Mrecon V is required on the 99 4R70W. you can verify this by looking at the dipstick. It says so on it. I feel 30000 miles is a good time to change the tranny fluid under any conditions. These tranny's work hard and even at about 14 qt of $4 oil its cheap insurance. Especially if the truck was used to tow. Hope you have as good a luck with your 99 as I have had. I love it.

MILLIMAR,

I'm pretty sure that Mercon V is by definition at least a synthetic blend or better (full syn.). I don' t know what you mean about the rear end. I don't know if it is factory filled with syn or not.

TIGER....

there is a metal tag..... on the drivers side of rearend... It is on the pumpkin.... via one of the bolts which holds the rearend cover on.....

It states that your rearend is filled with a synthetic rearend fluid.... 75W-90 I think.....

This is why, I was lead too maybe beleiveing that the ford company maybe put some form of synthetic trans. fluid in the tranny as well......

Thanks for all Your Help and advice....

The factory fill Mercon V is a synthetic blend.

There are Mercon V fluids available that are non-synthetic, synthetic blend, and full synthetic. Mobil 1 does not have a Mercon V fluid.
