possible bad torque converter

Hi all,
To start out this is my second tranny the first one had an OD problem and swapped that out to a used one with a little less miles. Now this one is starting to have problems. A couple weeks ago driving after a snow storm with slush on the ground the torque converter wouldn't stay locked it would unlock and lock and never stopped doing it. Well once home it stopped doing it for the next few weeks but noticed it would take longer to lock up. I drove a few hundred miles then out of the blue going home from my parents house ( 1 hour away) it started unlocking and locking again and then at one point it just wouldn't lock, it would just stay running at 2,000 rpms at 62 for about 40 miles. Once I hit a section of the road that was 65 i went up to 73 and never had a problem the rest of the way home until i got to my house. When i got to my house and put it in park it revved up to 3,000 rpms. I hit the gas but it didn't do anything so I shut off the truck. Turn it back on and it was good. Today driving it around it actually seemed to lock up at normal times.. Whats going on is the solenoid for the torque converter going bad... Sorry in advanced for being long winded.

You need to get it checked for codes. Many of the symptoms you listed can't be caused by the torque converter or the solenoid.

I don't have any check engine codes and there is nothing on the dash showing anything to do with the transmission.

What are you using to read the codes? The cheaper scanners can't read Ford transmission codes. You won't get a CEL, the OD off light will flash when setting transmission codes.

Tried it and it kicked down to third and the OD Off light came on like it should. Also this made me remember that when I was having problems with my torque converter kicking in and out I turned off the OD and it continued to do the same thing.

Oh, you are running a tune? Does it still do it if you return it to stock?

I knew that question was coming. I'm running custom tow from php for little over a year now...never had this issue prior to this last month. When it happens again I'll make sure to switch to stock tune.. I would also note I'm running 285/70/17 but i reprogrammed the computer for it.

If the problem goes away with the stock tune, contact PHP.
