Transmission fitment 1998 expedition to '01 f150

I have an '01 f150 4.6 auto 4x4,,,,3rd and OD are out. My wifes uncle recently wrecked his '98 expedition it is also a 4.6 4x4. I've done some research,,,,both tranny's are 4r70w , but I keep getting mixed answers. Some say that the tranny will work others say no it won't. Can somebody here tell me if this tranny will work or not. If not,,,,,why?

Thanks
Bob

Some info I found stated. "94 to 97 are the same, 98-00 and 01-03 are when the changes were made for direct interchange."

So does anybody know what has to be changed on the 1998 tranny to make it work in my 2001?

Thanks
Bob

Fitment

Hey Bob, I would suggest that you measure the tailshaft housings. It could be, that the vehicles have different wheelbase lengths, and that would mean a difference in the overall length of the trans. This usually means a different tail-
shaft length. A good trans guy can do the swap easy, if you don't know how. It probably won't cost much. If they are the same, swap it, and drive it like you mean it!

You need to change most of the internals and the case. The later transmissions have speed sensors that the older ones do not. If you put an older trans into the newer truck it's going to set codes and shift poorly, if at all.
