Transmission shifting problem

I have a 4R70W tranny. w/ 100k on it. The OD button is blinking. The OD on goes into a neutral state. When in Drive it shrugs on take off and then shifts 1st to 2nd. Reverse is fine.
I did not get the codes checked because I didnt want to blow it up driving it 30 miles to the shop and from reading this forum I believed there may be a problem with the snap ring on the OD servo.
After disassembly of the pan I noticed that the filter body is split open on one side. no noticable signs of metal shavings or chips in the fluid. I removed the valve body and removed the gasket. No signs of any broken parts or clippings are visible. All the valves are free and presumably working without interferance. The OD servo snap ring is in tact.

Any suggestions where to check next that may be a reasonable fix without taking the damn thing out and replacing it?

Thank You for any suggestions!

You can drive it cross country in 2nd gear without blowing the engine up.

If it shifts into 2nd and holds it without slipping, chattering, or making noise, you should be fine driving to the shop.
