2004 - 1999 Interchange question

I have been reading around the internet and seem to be finding varying answers. I have a good transmission from a 2004, new bodystyle (not heritage) f150 XL 4.6 2wd

Guy is selling a 99 xlt 4.6 for cheap but needs a trans. Thought, hey maybe mine will work.

So I have heard about three different answers on which transmission I currently have - 4r70w / 4r75e / 4r75w. Is there any way to positively ID it as it sits on the floor of my garage?

So assuming the 99 is a 4r70w...

Can this be swapped?

Hope someone can help - always enjoyed this forum. I had to create a new account tho - locked myself out

4.6 I believe has the 4R70W on the 2004.

You should be able to "decode" the 2004 VIN online, or look at the door jam sticker if you still have the truck around

Yeah i thought of that. I don't have any way of getting the vin - is there any way to ID the trans itself, maybe from the wiring or physical dimensions?

I believe they share the same case, is there any part number on the case that you can see?

The 04 4.6 is either going to be a 4R70W or 4R70E. Not sure what the differences are.
