Transmission fluid change out questions.
I have a 97 F-150, 4X4 (electronic shift) with 89000 miles on it.
After lurking, and reading the posts I have a good handle on draining the torque converter (TC) but I am way confused on how to fill it back up.
I assume (dangerous) that you just fill the transmission from the fill pipe (in the engine compartment) and let the tranny pump (running at idle), pump the new fluid into the TC and transmission, adding fluid until the whole unit is full (approx 17Qts).
Is this correct?

You are correct. The torque converter is filled from the transmission.
After draining the fluid and putting everything back together, dump about 8 quarts down the fill tube. Run the einge for about 1 minute. Then add another another 6 quarts. Let it run for a couple minutes and check the dipstick. Now add in 1/2 quart increments until full.
Overfilling is just as bad for the transmission as underfilling, so I always go very slow when adding fluid. Draining a little out is a pain.
