How to do Step 1 of a TRS replacement ?
'98 F-150 with 4.6L. I think it's the 4R70W tranny.
Having trouble with the shifter finding the "right spot" - occasional non-start until I wiggle the shifter, hard to move through the quadrant, etc. Want to determine if the trouble is in the cable, or the TRS.
Got stumped at removing the cable from the steel arm attached to the shift rod coming out of the tranny. Don't know how to remove the yellow plastic fitting which rides on the ball.
Does the outer portion just slip up by forcing it up - or does the outer portion have a tab which needs to be "unhooked" to let the pieces open up - or is it some other way?

Don't remove the cable from the lever. There's no reason to.
Is the shift lever loose? Is it hard to find the right gear with the shifter? If so there are two bolts under the shift column that hold the shift tube to the column. They are known to loosen and cause this problem.
If not, you probably do need a TRS. You do have a 4R70W trans. Remove the nut that holds the shift lever to the trans, leaving the cable attached to the lever. Then you can remove and replace the TRS. Note that this should be done with the wheels blocked and the parking brake set because you have to change the TRS with the trans in neutral. There is an alignment mark on the TRS that aligns in neutral.

Thanks, Michael.
I found two T-20 torx screws with the heads toward the front of the truck which seems to hold the bracket moving the cable. One was loose, the other tight. After tightening the loose one, I could not detect any improvement.
My intention in removing the cable at the TRS is to see if the stiffness is in the cable portion of the linkage, or if its in the TRS/tranny.
Have not yet been able to remove the nut on the tranny shaft. Got it soaking with penetrating oil, but SURE DON'T WANT TO TWIST IT OFF.
