Transmission Help

I just got an 1986 F-150 302 V8 with a 4 speed automatic transmission that has overdrive. I want to change the fluid in the transmission but I don't know what type it uses. Does anyone know or could tell me where I could find out? The truck has no owner's manual. Also, does the tranny have a filter or anything that would have to be changed out? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Trans ???

86f150,

There are a few things you can do.

1st: Check the Tranny dipstick. It will have the Ford Spec # for the Trans fluid stamped on it.

2nd: Get a Haynes or Chiltons service manual at your local parts store.

3rd: Match the Ford Spec #, with trans fluid at your local parts store.

Just a note: In order to get all the trans fluid from your Torque convertor, you need to either drain the convertor, or take it to a reputable Oil Change place, and have them flush and service the system.

This will One, clean/condition the trans and seals.
Two, flush out all of the old fluid.
Three, clean the trans screen(filter).

I have had it done in the past, for time saved, and not busting up my knuckles. I think I paid $70 to have it done. It should take about 45 minutes to have it done.

Best Of Luck...
