You are correct. There's Mercon V, Mercon SP, Mercon LV, and Mercon C. There used to be plain old Mercon.

Mercon V is used in all 4 speed truck automatics through 2008.
Mercon SP is used in the 5R110.
Mercon LV is used in the truck 2009+ 4 speed and all 6 speeds.
Mercon C is used in the car CVT.

Now, just to aggravate you some more, Amsoil ATF may be used in Mercon V applications. Amsoil ATL may be used in Mercon SP/LV applications.

So if I got Amsoil, I would need Amsoil ATF for my 2006 4 speed? That dealer is only 20 minutes from me. Is it worth the extra cost to get Amsoil?

The choice is up to you. I have it in mine and it works great..smooth shifts and runs a little cooler than Mercon V. Check out jbrew's posts on the subject. It's very well worth the extra cost IMO.

Remember - for a complete exchange with a machine you will need about 14 quarts. It is NOT worth using Amsoil - and actually NOT recommended - if all you are going to do is drop the pan. You should not mix fluids.

I agree with glc here. If you have deep pockets for a complete exchange..I would go with Amsoil, however, if you are only going with a pan drop, I wouldn't mix the two (even if Amsoil states there would be no compatibality issues). Get a quote for Amsoil and Mercon V (14-15 qts), then decide.

Amsoil is $11.50 a quart, here's the prices on Mercon V at Autozone:

Coastal - $4.99
Valvoline/Castrol - $5.99
Mobil 1 - $9.99

It's just that simple. Valvoline and Castrol are easy to find and meet spec. Amsoil and Mobil1 do not.

Before people start getting into another futile thread, it's been done recently.
