Mercon SP / Mercon VI

Hey Tranny Guys,

Just wondering if Mercon SP and Mercon VI is the same thing? Also, is there an internal filter on the Torqshift, or just the external one? Thanks for any info!

internal and external... they are two different fluids... different additives and friction coefficients.

No such thing as Mercon VI. There's Mercon V, and there's Dexron VI.

There are some synthetics out there that meet the Mercon SP specs that your TorqShift requires - Amsoil being one of them.

Here's what I was seeing....

Firstly, I don't want to dispute anyone on here that may have more knowledge on a subject than I do. Heck, gaining knowledge is the reason I joined, and I have learned a lot here. However, here is a link to what I was seeing on O'Reilly's website. If you go right under the "Product Details" tab you will see the Motorcraft part number as "MERCON SP". Then, right under that is MERCON VI QT. It raised a question in my mind, and I just wanted to clarify before I bought the wrong fluid.

O'Reilly doesn't know what they are talking about in my opinion. Google Mercon VI and you will see what I mean. LOTS of hits there include Dexron VI, Mercon V, and Mercon SP though. Also, read the data sheet I linked to for the Amsoil fluid. It's compatible with Mercon SP and Dexron VI but not a mention of Mercon VI.

Bottom line, if that's the fluid you want to buy, it's Mercon SP and will work.

I've never heard of MERCON VI. What's it used in?

Mercon V
Mercon SP
Mercon LV

only Mercons I know of...Mercon can be substituted for Mercon V(and NOT the other way around). None of the others can interchange

Can Mercon V be substituted for Mercon in a manual transmission? I've called around and can't track down the Mercon, (realize that it's not made or the license is up or whatever) but the book doesn't say "not" to use it with my 5spd. Well...I did it anyway today and the only immediate difference I noticed was that when I put it in 1st sometimes, it sounded like there was no fluid. It's fine right?

Yes u can use mercon v in place of mercon. Mercon is no longer made under the mercon name.

You can use just about anything in the manual trans. I know some people who use GM Synchromesh fluid in it.

With that said, Mercon V is the recommended fluid.
