trans cooler valve?

Got a silly question... on the line going from the trans cooler to the trans itself, there is a block or what appears to be a valve of some kind that the line is connected to just before the transmission, does anyone know what the sucker is? Was talking to a mechanic at the local trans shop in my area, and he was telling me just to eliminate it when rebuilding the trans and that it was a check valve that will probably have debris in it, and that it was not necessary. Only reason I ask is because it sounded kinda fishy to me, and I don't know the guy to take him at his word. Like I said, silly question so flame me if ya'll like.

its a thermostat basically. Opens when the trans hits like 150 degress and circulates through the cooler than. When It is closed it just by passes the trans cooler and straight back into the trans. You can eliminate it.

Thanks Gotts. I was told that it could be nixed, wasn't sure at all if that was true or not. Looked to see what a new one cost and it's only like $15
