06 FX4 Transmission toast....

06 FX4 with 62,200. Yep 2,200 past the 60K mile warranty. Imagine that.

My son and I left the house to go to a friends pool this afternoon and stopped at a stop sign. Took off and heard a terrible grinding noise that stopped after about 30mph or so. Stopped at the liquor store on the way there. Came out and had no reverse. Put it back in park shut it off, restarted and put it in reverse and it caught. Man did it catch. Like it slammed into reverse. Put it in driver after backing out and grinding again. Limped it to my buddies house who has his own shop. O/D light starting flashing on way the way there. Once there he got in and tried reverse and drive with same nasty results. Slamming into gear. Grinding. So there it sits until tomorrow morning. I'm calling Ford to see if they will help out with a truck that is 2k over factory warranty with a bad transmission.

Think I'll have any luck?

I've read quite a few threads like these on here in the past about low mileage F150s having trans problems and thought "Man, they must be tearing the crap out of their trucks". If Ford doesn't come through for me on this repair, this truck will be gone after it's fixed. I've been a Ford man my whole driving life (44 yrs old) and I'm pissed. I just cannot believe a truck that isn't abused with 62k can have have a transmission failure like this.

I know I'll hear "Hey, it happens". My reply to that is "Bull****". Sure it happens. But it shouldn't happen over and over and over again.

If Ford does the right thing and fixes this truck I'll remain a customer. If not it's gone and I'm looking elsewhere after repaired.

Has this happened to you before with other Fords you have owned? I am assuming this is the first time with this truck? I'm having some issues with my trans as of a week ago, but I'm at 195,000 miles and it is not as severe as your situation and this is the 1st time for my truck to do anything "major" like this, so I'm not pissed about it at all. I've been a Ford guy all my life too and this is by far the best truck I've ever had and will simply have it repaired as I don't intend to ever get rid of it (that and I can't afford to get anything else).

I do however understand how you feel, something like this shouldn't happen after only 60,000 miles, please keep us updated.

Called dealer and corporate office to no avail. They can't do anything to help me out with cost since the truck is 2,000 miles out of warranty.

Mitch I've owned many Ford trucks over the years and never had a trans problem. Ever. Previous full sized 96 Bronco I traded for this truck had close to 150k the 89 full size Bronco before it I sold with close to 250k.

I left a message with Darrin to call me back and quote me one of his transmissions instead of rebuilding this POS.

How many times did you change the transmission fluid in this truck? It should have just had it's second change.

Hey mx, only reason I asked the question is because you made an indication that this has happened, and I quote "over and over and over again"

As stated in my previous post I understand how you feel about this situation, it does suck and I might be in a similar situation myself though I hope not. I know I won't stray from a Ford product and I have had many over the years myself and they all had their issues, but after working on some of the wife's choices of vehicles (not Fords), Ford is what I'll stick with for the moment.

Once at 35K. I was going to have it done again when I took it in for the recall as soon as I had time in the next couple weeks.

The hottest I have ever saw the fluid get is around 185.

Just to update. I have a good friend that used to be a service writer for the dealership here in town. He knows the service manager at another Ford dealership about 30 minutes from here in another town. That dealership offered to replace the tranny with free labor. I would pay for the tranny which was around $1800 their cost. Reman. So at least one Ford dealer was going to come through for me. Which I understand they didn't have too.

I have another friend that worked at a transmission shop that opened his own shop up. That's where the truck is now and where I took it when it started acting up. He has a guy that is going to rebuild it completely with all new parts and upgrade where he can. Nothing is going to be reused. I'm told by my friend he's the best in town and will back it up with 3yr warranty. Total cost is going to be around $1800 and I'll have the truck back by next Saturday.

I was going to take the tranny out and send it to Darrin (BC Automotive) for a complete rebuild. I talked to him a couple days ago. Great guy and Darrin if you're reading this I appreciate your time to quote me the price and walk me through what you would do with it. The problem is the down time and shipping back and forth. I have to have this truck back up and running by next weekend so I can get my son to the next races.

So all in all not too bad. And I'm told it will be much better than when new. We'll see. AND at least one Ford dealer was willing to help me out since the truck was only 2k over warranty. 2k or 20k it's still over warranty.

That's good to hear mx. I was quoted $1900 yesterday to rebuild mine with everything new, no used parts, and told the same thing as far as it being better than new, difference in warranty though, 1 year unlimited mileage. I'm waiting to hear from a friend of mine who does this work and owes me one, said he would do it for the cost of the rebuild kit (all new parts), good thing is I can give him a hand and learn a little something about these transmissions.

Good luck with yours too, Mitch. Hopefully we'll both be back on the road before long. And hopefully with stronger transmissions.

Yeah, same to ya. I really need to have mine back on the road by next weekend, just waiting on some money. I'm in a better situation than you as far as how long my trans lasted, 195,000 miles before this happened and I don't baby it, it is a work truck.

Every post that I see scares me more and more. The only Transmission problem that I ever had was when I first purchased it, every morning when going around a curve close to my school I would accelerate after coming around it. Felt a slight "clunk" or "shudder". I had an Edge Evolution programmer on my truck thinking it would help me out with gas mileage for approximately 44 days. (Never really had a problem before i installed it.) Started noticing that my transmission at low gears was whining consistently, took notice because I had seen the same problem before on a youtube channel. After filling it up completely with gas I drove back home and started noticing my transmission slightly slipping. (probably should have drove it straight to the ford dealership). Later on tonight I took it out after dinner with my father showing him that my transmission was slipping badly. Set everything back to stock already knowing the damage was done. It was night time and my truck wouldn't drive over 3rd gear. Eventually it wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear and then finally but barely we made it home. My truck was whining like crazy and from all the reviews and complaints of the unfortunate ford fans I have realized that I'm going to have a very expensive replacement cost at the least. I'm a 17 year old kid, I have only 1200$ to my name. The cost isn't going to be cheap and I fear only tough times from here. I need that money for school, food, gas and now I have to replace a transmission. Please if you can help me out. What would the best thing for me to do. I have a job and no ride. This is unacceptable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting the impression that the people that are having problems with their transmission are either using an aftermarket programmer and/ or non Motorcraft Mercon V trans oil when they service the trans. In either case, it would be clear that use of non Ford approved components are the root cause. It would be invaluable if this information was tracked so that this could be positively determined.
