4r70w problems

i have a 97 f150 4x4 with a 4.6. the transmission will not go forward at all( im guessing a worn clutch problem). It was probly caused by the previous owner running 35 with 3.55 gears. I will be regearing soon after trans. i havent ever messed with a truck transmission before, only atvs and such. Do i have to remove the trans to replace the clutches? if so how hard is it to do? I really dont want to have to drop it but i gotta do what i gotta do. Oh and reverse works if that helps. thank you in advance

you really need to have a professional help do it. You can find guys on craigs list or what ever who will rebuild it for cheap but I would at least do that if you never rebuilt a transmission. Lots of special tools and expertise..

Yes, the transmission must come out to rebuild it.

I probly should seek professional help but I would rather give it a shot first. If and when I fail I will get some one more experienced. I would rather try to understand how it works and what's wrong rather than just send it off. How much will the parts probably run me to replace just the forward and direct clutches? I can't find a place that sells them

It's not worth it pulling a 14 year old transmission just to replace a few parts. Do a complete rebuild or buy a rebuilt/used transmission.
