Trans Advice

So I am at a decision point with my Trans.

Short history:

2005 FX4 81k miles

I have a recurring P1744 converter clutch sys peformance mechanically stuck off code. This causes the dreaded "TRANS FAULT" and blinking O/D indication.

After much troubleshooting a Ford Trans Tech diagnosed it as, under load the TC wont stay locked so it jumps out of O/D. If it does this 5 times in a drive cycle you get the fault. It basically amounts to an efficiency issue as it still drives and shifts normal even after the fault, just wont stay locked.

Bought the truck used so my guess is original owner towed with O/D on and burnt up the TC.

Dealership where I bought it has already paid to replace the Valve Body early on, which was obviously not the right course of action. They are still on the hook to fix it for the next 3 months.

Option 1 -

Original Dealership farms out their trans work to an AAMCO with an F rating from BBB and very poor online reviews. So if I bring it to them I will get questionable workmanship, and either a aftermarket convertor or a junk yard peice likely. They wont touch anything but the converter and I get my truck back, hopefully in one peice.

Option 2 -

Cut my losses and have my trans rebuilt on my dime at local ford dealership. I have a relationship with them and their trans guy is really good, by reputation and my discussions with him. He will go through it front to back, change out anything that is worn, put in a new Torque Converter, and a new OEM trans cooler. I have a coupon in hand for 15% off parts and labor on all work.

I plan to keep this truck for another 3 years 60k miles easy, so I am leaning to just doing it right the first time and have the trans gone through fully, even if it is on my dime.

What opinions are there from the peanut gallery?

Try option 1 and hope for the best - and if/when it craps out again off warranty, then go get it done right.
