Get the fault codes read. You need to take it to a dealer, tranny shop, or garage that has a scanner than can read Ford trans codes, the free scans at Autozone and other parts stores can't.

I'm guessing it might be a fluid overtemp if it only happens when towing.

Mine just did that last Thursday. Took it to the dealer and low and OD were out. 5.4L with 84,000 very well maintained miles.

$3,000

Only 84,000 and you spent $3,000 on the trans, makes me think, mine has now 74,000.

Find my thread, Trans Fault in the 04-08 section.

Your issue sounds similar.

Trans Fault--O/D Flashes

Hi i have a 2005 f-150 4.6 it will sometimes give me a trans fault and my overdrive flashes and kicks out of od untill i kill the truck and restart it and then everythings back to normal. I up graded my trans cooler to a bigger one from a salvage yard, i thought fixed it because it hasent done it in a while. I my thoughts is its overheating. My question is does my trans have a internal thermastat? Some say yes some say no. My ford dealer wants to hook up to it and charge me 110.00 to tell me anything. I had trany serviced about 5000 miles ago. What trany do i have? The door panel says (A) . Any help would be very helpfull. THANKS EVERYONE

You need to read out the OBD2 codes with a scanner that can read Ford transmission codes. To buy a capable scanner is about $150, so you need to take it to a shop. You do NOT need to go to the dealer. The readers parts stores use for a free check aren't capable.

You have either a 4R70E or 4R75E.

Hi & Welcome.

Any reason yall have three threads goin' fer the exact same thang?

Do ye have three trucks wif the same problem?

To answer this truck's question - go gitcher Trans codes pulled - flashing OD means you have a definite internal trans fault - Do all the restarts and Hail Mary's yall want - it ain't gunna be magically fixin' itself.

The more yall drive it, the more damage yer inflictin'.

Reckon This'un's gunna require some Dee-Vine Innervinshun ...

Let us commune:

"Oh 'Maginary Friend (a.k.a. IM to yer adoring accolytes), creator o' the Great Pumpkin, Snoopy, beef jerky, draft beer, Coriolis Force, Higgs Bosons, accretion discs, an' pickmeups, please guide us pathetic jamokes and instill the wisdom required to at least recognize -if not avoid - doing some seriously dumb, silly, stupid stuff.

We are but lost, fart-filled, vacuous, ayss-kissin', butt-scratchin', hirsute, frail, besotted, vain, self-absorbed, venal, selfish, deceitful, posin', irreverant, pagan, crass, slothful, droolin', carousin', covetin', skirt-chasin', ciggybutt-smokin', hooch-drankin', abrasive, prideful, potty-mouthed, pernicious, egotistical, territorial, provincial, malodorous, ignant and stanky 'ol human been's - we beseech thee'yall to give us some o' thet thar guid'nance juju - 'er even a simple freakin' clue would be beyond awesome'ness, bro.

Thankee in advance, IM, fer takin' the time outt'er yer busy schedule o' keepin' all them other planets spinnin' n'sich, to shine yer munificent magic flashlight on our dark ignancy and bestowing a teensy-weensy slice o' enlightenment upon us poor unfortunate slope-browed, slack-jawed, mouthbreathing knuckledraggers whut don't have the sense o' a dead Junebug in December."

Anyhoo - hope ever'thang's kosher up Yonder, Big Guy. Give ol' Allah a kick inna noogies fer us, aight?

Yer faithful' servant, ol' BlackSheepBubber.

Eh men, eh?

Good luck, OP.

Stubby, I merged this thread you started today with the one for the same truck on the same transmission problem that you posted in 2011. Please don't create multiple postings on the same topic - it leads to confusion.

And, I deleted the other thread you started today on this subject, since it wasn't needed.

If you're not going to take people's advice, why post?

- Jack
