05 f150 4x4 is junk
I have a 05 f150 Lariat and I am on the verge of replacing all the 4x4 components, IWE, Selenoid, etc. Is there any options for this model to convert it to manual lockouts? It seems that this is a major flaw from Ford and should be recalled. I'm afraid that I will replace all the components and in a short period of time will have the same problems. This setup must have been designed by a crackhead.

I have replaced both actuators (IWE) and the selenoid. The 4x4 works now but the drivers side sounds like the gears in the hub are gonna explode when I shift into 4x4. If I shift while moving it isn't that bad and once it locks in everything is fine. I absolutely HATE this setup!! I will be selling this piece of sh*t come spring. Way to go Ford! You have just forced a Ford man to look at Chevy.

Why would an IFS Chevy be any different? They don't have manual hubs either... How do you think they engage?
Even the late model solid axle F250's and Dodges 2500 use vacuum to engage the hubs.. But, I think the Fords still have the manual lock option?? Maybe??
I've got over 217,000 miles on mine and the 4x4 has always worked when needed for me.. I do 'exercise' the 4x4 at least once a month, so maybe that's what keeps mine going??
Good luck with finding a 21st century 4x4 that doesn't use electronics or vacuum to engage the 4x4 in one form or another.. Even the newer F150's with a 'manual' lever to shift to 4hi or 4lo will still use vacuum to engage the hubs..
