Angry transfercase swap

Hey Guys i am new to this and new to fords. i have a 97 F150 4x4 with 4.6 i had some problems with my t-case so i swaped one out with a 98 just like mine so i thought. the only diff it had and i did not noticed until it was done is that the new one i put in has a different tail shaft for the speed sensor. my question is can i just change the tail shaft or do i need to just rebuild my old one and put it in??? Thanks

No, I figured the 97-98 trucks were the same. What is the difference in the tailshaft?

What were the problems you were having?

The plugin connector on the very rear of the t-case i think is the speed sensor. one is gear driven and the plug i pulled out of the new one is not gear driven. and also now my 4wd light wont come on i dont know if it has to deal also with this plug.

when i pulled my old t-case it did not have any vacume hoses hooked up to it. it was just pluged with a cap. my new t-case will not lock in but you can tell it is trying. I was wanting to know if i could just swap the rear housing of the t-case

The 97-8 use the same speed sensor. Are you positive that the 98 t-case is in fact a 98 and not a newer model? Ford changed the sensor in 99 so it will not work with a 97 or 98 harness. I cannot recall off hand if the gear on the output shaft is different. Pull off both sensors and check to see if they look the same where the gears mesh with the output shaft. If they are the same use your 97 sensor in the new t-case.
