Trans. shuttering

Well it started happening the night before last. I could feel a shuttering in the drive train while under load. It wasn't present all the time. It was intermittent. so I thought it may be related to the tune I was running. I reprogrammed it, but the shutter was still there. So I set it back to stock. Still there. Having had two separate spark plug problems after having the plugs changed, I thought it may be related to the plugs again. So I brought it to a different dealer this time, since I haven't liked the service I received at the two previous dealerships. I was taken right in with no appointment. After about an hour it was diagnosed. They told me my transmission fluid was a little low, and that it had leaked through the seal into the transfer case. Resulting in an overfilled T/C. that is what was causing the shutter. Cost was about $550 to replace the seal, + $200 to flush and refill the transmission , And they said they would re flash the computer.( Yes I returned it to stock). They also told me my Power steering pump was leaking and needed replacement. ( I haven't seen any spots in my driveway, and it wasn't noisy) so this was news to me . The cost of that was another $450. So by the time I left the total was $1300. ouch My truck just turned 94,000 miles. Anyone else had these issues ?

Be prepared for your tranny to fail before too long...Mine just failed and apparently its VERY common with these trucks when you get in the 100,000 mile ball park

What where the first signs, when yours started to go ? Did you have the dealer do the work ? Did you have yours rebuilt ? Costs?

This just happened today. THe first sign that something was wrong was a rattle at certain rpms under load, then it started to make a sort of growling noise. It ran fine otherwise. Then on the way to the dealership today to have it looked into it started to slip in and out of gear (first time this has ever happened) then bam, just like that it slipped out of gear and would do nothing in drive. Its currently at the dealership, hoping to hear back from them by the end of the day. I was told it could cost around 2400 for a rebuild or 3000 for a new/remanufactured transmission. the remanufactured tranny would come with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.

Im just saying, even if yours isnt currently bad or going out it can happen just like that and apparently it happens a lot around this mileage. Just a heads up.

Whats bothering me is that my gut feeling was that it was ignition related. Either the plugs or the coils. Or even a fuel injector issue. ( ford had sent me a letter about injector issues with these trucks) . There have been no indication of any leaks from anywhere on my truck. Its dry underneath and no spots in the driveway. Trans temps have been normal. No codes or idiot lights indicating a problem. and when I read other posts of problems that sound the same it is related to the ignition components . No one else has mentioned a leak from the trans. to transfercase causing a shuttering.

I have had no leaks with mine either, and actually had the tranny serviced just over a year ago. My tranny temps wer enormal as well. Mine even has the tow package with the fluid cooler mounted up front for even more protection.

Jon;

So - is it fixed now? You did not specify...If not -

Sounds like you were taken - I don't think it's possible for the trans fluid to 'leak' into the transfer case. There are 2 seals and a shaft between them.

It's a 2005 - you researched the prevalent injector TSB and factory solution (if it's not a plug/cop/cop boot/dielectric issue).

You can try and get any pending Mode 6 codes pulled -
(yer programmer can't do that) - for random misfires.

The above is, admittedly, just supposition - I'll try paging my fave expert..

Good luck sir.

No it is not fixed yet. Im supposed to pick it up tomorrow. They had that transfercase out before I could get the baby seats out of the truck, once I gave them the OK to fix it. I believe I still have the letter I recieved from ford about the injectors. But that wont undo the money spent on replacing the seals.

From what I've been reading here, this is actually a common issue.

I also have seen those posts.,but I didnt see them mention it causing a shuttering. Mostly just loss of fluid. wouldnt an overfilled transfercase puke it out a vent line or something ?

I still think ignition is the culprit, because I was also experiencing it breaking up at higher rpms . I guess Ill just have to wait till tomorrow to see what they have to tell me.
