2wd and 4x4 tranies

Hey all I have a 98 xl, sc, 5spd, 4x4 and found an 01 xl, 5spd, 2wd with only 146,000k's on it, but now the question is will a 2wd trany fit in a 4x4, are they the same?

The bell housing patterns are also different between the 4.2 and 4.6 - you didn't say what engines are in the 2 trucks.

In a word, no. The 4x4 transmission has a shorter output shaft and a different extension housing.

Ah yes I did forget to mention, they are both a 4.6lt's
So I guess I can't use the trany, but I can swap the engine then!!! And sell the rest off!!!

Yes you could. It would involve dis-assembly of the transmission but it could be done.
