Wierd OD problem

I have a 2001 extended cab 5.4 with 85,000 on the ticker. Its hesitant to shift into OD. truck runs great, no CELs no tranny lights no OD blinking lights. tranny shifts nice and smooth into every gear, no slippage, no shutter, just dont always shift into OD. when it does it shifts nice and smooth.

sometimes itll shift in right away, other times i have to mess with the throttle to get it to shift, stomp hard on the gas and completely let off. if its in od and i disengage it then reangage it, itll stay in 3rd. ill have to stomp on the gas to to get back into od. doesn't seem like anything major, cuz when it does shift into od its as smooth as butter. just seems like the trans doesnt know its suppose to shift. i havent changed filter or fluid yet. i bought it at 59,000. when i do chnge it ill also b putting in a FT seperator plate. any ideas? thanks guys.

I would start with the MLPS, or the neutral safety switch as they call it at the auto parts stores. A problem there will cause this.

Have you corrected the speedo for the oversize tires? That could cause it not to shift properly.

Thanks Darrin. Yes the speedo has been corrected. The tires have been on there for a couple years, the shift problem just started a month or two ago. Getting worse and worse. The neutral safety switch will prevent it from going into OD? Didn't know that. Any other sensors that could cause this?
