Question for JMC's expertise

I read on a post awhile back (that I haven't been able to locate) where JMC explained how to retro-fit the wiring pins on a newer 4r70w to fit an older truck. Anyone have this info? Also, what is my range of years i can use? Is one better than the other? Is the F-250 the same? I just bought a 94 F-150 ext. cab flare side 4x4 5.0 with 80k that only has reverse. The wife is against me taking the one out of her expy ,so I guess I have to go find one. Thanks for any info you can give me! Stewy

Which tranny does it have? It may have a E4OD, not a 4R70W.

The door tag reads "U" which if i'm not mistaken is the 4R. That is also the performance grade i would give the current tranny. A "U".

Yep, that's a very early 4R70W - first year. Due to bellhousing patterns, the only 4R70W's that will fit are out of 5.0's and 4.2 V6's, and it has to be out of a 4x4. You can't use a 4x2 tranny, and you can't use one from a Triton 4.6 or 5.4. Your best bet might be to get yours rebuilt with updated parts. Contact Darrin Burch at BC Automotive in Indiana.

I was afraid of that. I read up on the updates. There's a bunch of them. I called the shop that has done work for me in the past and it sounds like it"s get out the wallet time.

So anyhow what years are my options? Are F250's compatible?

The F-250 never had a 4R70W. All you are going to find in those with the right bellhousing are C6's and E4OD's.

What years used the tranny I need? I'm gonna dump the cash and get the upgrades but Id like to know what is considered an "early" 4r? How late did they go? Sorry I like to be in the know about the stuff I work on and own. I'm funny like that.
