Transmission # 4

Took my toy hauler out to a campsite about 4 hours from my house. First Long haul after my new 4:56 gears. Towed great on the way there, no problems trans temps never over 185F even on one of the grades where it dropped down to 2nd at about 3800rpm's. Trans temps were around 165 - 172 most of the trip. On the way home same grade opposite direction 2nd gear for maybe 2min. trans temp hit 190F got to the top and I hear a pop followed by a clanking sound like a chain dragging. Any speeds over 50mph and the clanking was loud as all hell. Back to Ford she goes. I think my empty toy hauler @ 6500lbs dry is just too much on these crap transmission.

Some say theyre great, others beg to differ. I'm with you on this. Buddy of mine has gone through 3 transmissions and is on his fourth at 80,000 miles.

Im on the first with 27k and had a tuner on there ever since 3,000 miles. Has been flawless for the most part, towed a couple loads no more than 5000lbs and the truck is 7200 from the factory, plus some 35" tires with 18s. Installing a valve body and flushing the transmission fluids at 30k...if it doesnt go out on me first that is

Are these FORD reman transmissions then?

You may want to look into getting a "built" transmission. I'm not the easiest on my built 4r70w and it feels fine behind my blown 5.4 that was destroying 8.8 pinions and carriers.

Is it warranty? If not then use an outside quality shop.

Where in So Cal are you.

Its all under warranty and the first one started out as a Ford Reman. and has since been rebuilt by ford. It just sucks! I'm so tired of this and to top it off as I'm limping it home I get passed by a chevy tahoe pulling the same size trailer.

man, I get why Darrin says that the ford reman warranty is good when you need it. Notice, no "if"

it seems like its hit or miss with these transmissions, i've got a buddy that has had one go out but i haven't had mine go out in around 60k and i've had 35's ever since my truck left the dealership and 38's for the past 30k or so. i'm also pretty rough on mine.

When your tired of reman's not lasting and are willing to cough up some cash (preferably if you can get ford to reimburse you for your problems in some manner?) check out my sig, Darrin built mine and I haven't had any problems. I'm putting a modest amount of torque through mine

Don't get me wrong I love my truck and the 5.4's are tough as nails, but it sure would be nice to bolt an Allison trans up to it. Or take a torque shift out of a super duty.

Sure seems that some guys are asking a little too much out these 1/2 ton trucks. I don't care what Ford says it can pull.

6500 dry. What's the loaded weight? 8500 or 9?

Problem is I have yet to pull it loaded. No water, toys, anything of any weight. I don't think one cooler and clothes count.
